What is a bib number?

In cycling, a bib number is simply the number each rider wears to be identified during a race. It’s usually printed on a piece of paper or fabric and pinned to the rider’s jersey, with a smaller version attached to their bike. Officials use it to track positions and timings, and it helps fans and commentators know who’s who in the race.

Every rider is assigned a unique number, often grouped by team. For example, the team leader usually wears the lowest number in their group, and the previous year’s winner often wears number 1. While the numbers are practical, they can also become part of a rider’s identity during a race.

At events like the Tour de France, where VELUX is proud to be a partner, bib numbers are a familiar part of the experience. Fans watching from the roadside or on TV often spot their favourite riders by number before seeing their name.

Behind the scenes, the number also links to race data, like timings and performance, and plays a role in ensuring everything runs smoothly.

For most riders, receiving a bib number is just part of the routine before a race. But it still signals something important: you're ready to ride. Whether you're a professional or an amateur, once the number goes on, it’s time to focus on the road ahead.
